Romance of the Perilous Land: A Roleplaying Game of British Folklore

ADD TO WISHLIST >

"If you have any interest in British folklore Romance of the Perilous Land is a treasure trove of interesting ideas and fresh takes on old stories. And if you don't - even if you aren't from the British Isles - it's a fun mid-weight fantasy setting to play through; one packed with weird creatures and brave heroes" - Richard Jansen-Parkes, Tabletop Gaming Magazine

Romance of the Perilous Land is a roleplaying game of magic and adventure set in the world of British folklore, from the stories of King Arthur to the wonderful regional tales told throughout this green and pleasant land. It is a world of romantic chivalry, but also of great danger, with ambitious kings, evil knights, and thieving brigands terrorising the land, while greedy giants, malevolent sorcerers, and water-dwelling knuckers lurk in the shadows. As valiant knights, mighty barbarians, subtle cunning folk, and more, the players are heroes, roaming the land to fight evil, right wrongs, and create their own legends.

This new edition of Romance of the Perilous Land: A Roleplaying Game of British Folklore includes:

- A gazetteer detailing the 11 kingdoms of the Perilous Land, with plenty of hooks inspired by regional British folklore

- More than 70 different folkloric creatures, from redcaps and pottons to Knuckers and Boggarts.

- Six classes that can be customised with backgrounds, talents, deities and factions.

- An updated ruleset, keeping the streamlined OSR-inspired mechanics but adding brand new options

- Join factions like Robin Hood's Merry Men, Merlin's Order of Enchanters and the Knights of the Round Table, each with their own guidelines for roleplaying.

- Stunning artwork throughout from Alan Lathwell and John McCambridge

I bought this item a while ago, but when I try to re-download it, the only files listed for it in my DrivethruRPG library are...

9781472834751_web.pdf
RofPL_Errata_grey.pdf
RofPL_Errata_colour.pdf
RofPL_Adventure_grey.pdf
RofPL_Adventure_colour.pdf
Romance_Character_Sheet_editable.pdf

...which do not include the pdf of the book itself. How can I download that.

Never mind...it turned out that 9781472834751_web.pdf is the file I was looking for, it just wasn't opening correctly before.

Hello, it looks like the file was updated on June 9, 2022. Could you tell me what changes went into the update? Does it fix known errata listed on the Osprey site?

How does the game reconcile that Arthur and Robin Hood lived in vastly different time periods? Hand wave it?

The game's setting is designed to be a melting pot of British folklore, a hazy recollection of days gone by. So it's not really about the history as much as playing in an enchanted land inspired by that folklore.

Question about the weapons list. I may have missed this, but the armor and weapons section has artwork for an axe but I don't see any statistics / information for an axe as a weapon.

I have just used the short sword and longsword as a basis. So a one handed axe or hatchet would do a short sword damage and a larger two handed axe would do a longsword damage. Use the swords stats as your basis. Both are for slashing or hacking.

Got this off Amazon. Very impressive shrunkwrapped system. I have a couple of issues I hope Scott M can resolve for me....

WITCH DOLL, a mere level 1 Spell, allows the caster to do D4 damage to the target *for each pin* they stick in it... and blithely mentions that multiple pins can be used per action. As is, that's an instant death spell! (It also doesn't list any Saves.) -- CAN CHARACTERS ALWAYS SAVE VS SPELLS?

MAGICAL CHARMS lists some nice folksy remedies and so on, but includes items that PCs will tend to use by default especially Mistletoe (Protection vs witches, hags and fairies) and Salt Pouch (slight daily enhancement to armour), both of which expire... weird trivial things to keep track of. How are these limited?

ENCHANTED ITEMS are lovely, but where do they come from?

Like everybody else - a map would be nice. I'd also like a GM's screen or cheat sheet

Witch Doll: It is up to the GM for the save. I myself would use a Mind Save to avoid the damage as it is the governing stat under the saves section on page 76

Magical Charms: It states that these are rare items and sometimes the reason for a whole quest. These should not be found in abundance and should be limited by the GM and only found during adventures and the like. That is how it reads to me. They are a kin to magical potions and such in say Dungeons and Dragons.

Enchanted Items: As with many magical items, the source is up to the GM and how he wishes to present the world.

In the Character Skills section, it mentions Climb under the Reflex ones, but this isn't on the skills list on the character sheet.
I don't see any of the classes or backgrounds giving it to the player as a starting option, so is that deliberately not listed on the character sheet?

Probably a design choice of using Athletics instead of Climb. Just to narrow the skills down a bit.

I couldn't agree more about the map (mentioned in a comment below). It is a HUGE oversight to not include a map. As someone else mentioned, a Pendragon map can do in a pinch, but the mythos and locations of this game are slightly different.

This is a great game, but it REALLY needs a map. I've downloaded about 15 fantasy maps and none of them completely correlate to what is described in pages 141-163.

Here's the best map I've found. I like the style (similar to the one posted below), but there aren't any rivers, mountains, forests, or city locations.

Does the mythos include all of the British Isles, or is it predominantly English (King Arthur, Robin Hood, etc.)? Does it included Celtic myth like the sidhe (i.e., faery), etc.?

It heavily includes Celtic myth. Cu Sidhe is in there, for example

The layout and presentation is great but the lack of a region map is a glaring omission. There are specific kingdoms and features peculiar to this publication that do not appear on maps made for other games. It feels incomplete without it.

I can't find in the book how can a player receive valour points. In the pregenerated character she starts with 3 points, is that the initial value for all characters?

Looking at the preview on Amazon. The Knight class lists four (+2) Bonuses to ALL stats. at various different levels between 1 and 10. Wondering if that is a correct? If so that will make the characters very powerful.

That's correct. The way the game is designed is that all attributes increase and difficulty scales, so it all works out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
